Aten road 1x chainrings are the most aerodynamically advanced chainrings for top level time trial and triathlon usage, featuring the AeroCoach ARC subtle noncircular design
Machined from aluminium and reinforced with a carbon backer plate, Aten chainrings feature a lenticular outer profile with an undulating chain ridge, helping to keep the airflow attached over the chain as it passes down the face of the chainring. Aten road chainrings are 11 and 12 speed compatible.
Removable bolt covers ensure that the surface of the ring is uniform to the crankset spider.
AERODYNAMICS
Aten road 1x chainrings provide you with the most aero option for your crankset, allowing you to remove the front derailleur and benefit from the unique Aten design which provides optimal airflow from chain to chainring.
Swapping from a 2x standard chainring setup to an Aten 1x chainring will save between 4-7w at 45kph depending on the size/shape of the front derailleur.
BIOMECHANICS
Due to the higher speeds involved in a time trial, inertia and momentum is much greater than normal. This causes pedal speed to be much smoother, and means that for a time trial (high speed) large increases in gearing and dramatic noncircular shapes are not optimal:
The ARC increases gearing quickly at the beginning of the pedal stroke as this is when the main force producers activate (gluteus maximus, vastus medialis & lateralis, as well as the tibialis anterior). After this period gearing is maintained all the way through the highest torque phase before gradually decreasing down to a minimum gearing at bottom dead centre. This smooth dropoff is when the effect of gravity and the lower leg muscles come into play.
The unique time trial specific design will help increase power output by 3-5w, and allow a smoother pedal stroke than normal. Unlike other noncircular designs you can train on the ARC ring without causing a detriment to your pedal stroke and swap between round/ARC rings without difficulty. In addition, there will be little to no artificial power inflation when using the ARC with a crank/pedal based power meter.
UCI LEGAL
Aten chainrings are compliant with the latest UCI regulations regarding equipment and may be used in UCI sanctioned events.
COMPATIBILITY
Aten road chainrings are compatible with 11 and 12 speed chains, and with the following cranksets:
130bcd 5 bolt (non-power cranks, and power meter cranks where the power pod is contained within the chainring spider)
110bcd 4 bolt (Shimano 8000, 8100, 9100, 9200 – including Shimano power options)
Please note Aten road chainrings are not compatible with Shimano cranksets that are fitted with aftermarket power meter pods (eg. 4iiii, Stages). Please also check chainstay clearance for larger sizes.
INSTALLATION
When swapping from a 2x to a 1x setup, we advise to shorten the chain 1-2 links, ensuring that there is still sufficient length in the largest sprocket on the rear for best chain tension. The B screw on the rear mech should also be set to improve chain tension, please refer to the manufacturer's details for adjustment. Chainring bolts should be tightened to 4-5Nm.
